SpeleoArt Workshop 2015 at NSS Convention, Waynesville, MO

The mission for the SpeleoArt Workshop is to provide a starting point for continuing inspiration to enter artwork into the annual Salons. The workshops are run by volunteers, and equipment with materials are paid for by the class fees which is how we keep them so low!

Fees can either be paid at time of your registration or you can pay on site. If you pay through Registration, please bring a receipt to class, or you may find yourself paying twice!

If you are an Arts and Letters member and your membership is up to date, the workshops are at a reduced rate, and are not paid through Convention Registration. Please click here and fill in this form and email back to fineartsalon@caves.org so you can secure your spot.

The morning will be a class to prep for an afternoon of expedition type sketching for journal and article illustration. The afternoon will be a field trip to Railroad Cave 8 miles from the School It is a tunnel cave, 1800ft of packed clay passage with 15-30ft ceilings throughout and occassional side passages which loop and return to the main. Includes a heavily ornate 25ft dome pit side passage with active waterfall and well hidden behind an equally impressive 30ft column/flowstone/rimstone formation which looms over then cascades down a large breakdown pile. The object of this sketching trip is to practice expedition style drawing techniques in life drawing; memorization and how to photograph the figure in action for artwork. We will be looking at techniques used for capturing action for the following day’s Collaborative. We will incorporate our subjects into individual cave scenes taken from photographs and sketches brought from our caving trip. Sketching kit will be provided.

THURSDAY 16th July 2015

Collaborative painting - 9:30am- 4:30pm (tutorial 9:30)

$5 for all

The last day is Collaborative Day. The focus will be for cavers to come together to work on one piece that celebrates this year’s Convention experience. A long prepared canvas will be placed in the Salon area on a large table at the beginning of the week. It can be worked on by anyone who wishes to join in! You do not have to be an artist! The subject will be your most significant memories from your caving trips and an exploitation of the skills you learn in the morning tutorial. The expectation is that the day will provide enough time for everyone to finish the artwork. Materials provided.
